Aradan geçen yirmi yılda sadece Dostoyevski’nin hayata bakışında değil, aydın Rus gençliğinin ideallerinde de kökten bir değişim yaşanmıştır. Geçmişin “güzel ve yüce olan her şeye” iman eden romantik idealistleri gitmiş, yerine akıl hocalığını Nasıl Yapmalı? (1863) ile Çernışevski’nin yaptığı, akla iman ederek özçıkarı her şeyin üstünde tutan yeni bir nesil tasarımı gelmiştir.Çernışevski’nin sembolü kristal saraydı.
