Hayatının büyük bir bölümünü Batı’da “özne” kavramının hangi söylemsel ve pratik süreçlerle kurulduğunu araştırmaya vakfetmiş olan Michel Foucault, bu amaçla eserlerinde delilik, suça eğilimlilik, hastalık gibi kategorilerin özne oluşumunda ne gibi tarihsel ve toplumsal roller oynadığını araştırmıştır. Düşünür, Cinselliğin Tarihi’ne yönelik çalıştığı son yıllarında ilgisini modernite öncesi döneme yöneltmiş, Antik Yunan ve Latin metinlerine dönerek modern özne düşüncesinin izini sürmeye girişmiştir. Kendi deyişiyle bir “düşünce tarihçisi” olarak her zamanki titiz çalışmasını sürdüren Foucault, dur durak bilmeden söz konusu dönemlerde yazılmış metinleri incelemiş, bu metinlerde özne ve kendilikle ilgili hangi meselelerin ön plana çıktığını, hangi soruların zaman içinde gündemden düştüğünü ve hangi kavramsal çerçevelerin kurulup dağıldığını araştırmıştır.
